Wailua Bike Path Route Poll

SOURCE: The Wailua-Kapaa Neighborhood Association SUBHEAD: Consider participating in an online poll concerning Wailua Beach bike path route. image above: Rendering, looking north, at the highway widening at the Wailua River. This from the Unlimited, the company that built the Waipuoli Beach Resort monstrosity. http://www.unlimitedhawaii.com/photo%20gallery.html We on Kauai are trying to save a beautiful beach from a proposed bike path. There is another equally stunning option for this bike path, just slightly removed from the sandy shore, that ALL the island's environmentalists adamantly favor. From the Sierra Club to OHA (the Office of Hawaiian Affairs) to Friends of Wailua Beach to Surfrider Foundation to Malama Wailua, on down to every individual and family who enjoys beaches without cyclists and pedestrians parading through, we strongly advocate protecting Wailua Beach. Other reasons not to put a bike path next to the ocean -- global warming, storms, hurricanes -- are numerous, obvious and wordy. The Wailua-Kapaa Neighborhood Association (WKNA) has just created a poll to vote on this issue and invites proponents of both sides to vote on this issue. Proponents FOR the path on the beach are working this poll to their advantage, therefore, opponents need a lot of votes right now to show the true public sentiment about this issue. Wailua Beach is one of the most sacred areas in all of Hawaii. So, if you know other people who love beaches, love Hawaii/Kauai, or just appreciate the Earth as it still is in some places, then please pass this along right away. The Question: "Wailua Beach Bike Path – On the Beach or Not?" Go to our the WKNA website and vote at http://wkna.org/bikepath_poll.html (or enter "wkna.org" in your browser; then select "Issue Poll" on the left.) see also: Ea O Ka Aina: No Bike Path on Wailua Beach 9/17/09

We need the bike path to allow beach and shopping access for the 700 new homes slated for the DHHL lands on the south side of the river. Those folks will take the shortest distance to the Wailua retail areas and beyond, along the highway
