Lihue & Kilauea KIUC-FFP meetings

SUBHEAD: Notes from the Tuesday & Wednesday public meetings held by KIUC / FFP on future energy for Kauai. By Elaine Dunbar on 20 April 2011 - Tuesday night KIUC/Free Flow Power meeting in Lihue. A couple interesting things came up tonight at the KIUC meeting. First, it was relayed to me by Don Heacock that at last night's meeting in Waimea, KIUC stated that they will move ahead with this project regardless of anything. Tonight, they said, if the people of Kauai don't want this or there is a lot of opposition, they certainly wont continue. [Editor's note: They said both things at Monday night's meeting] They have been caught in quite a few lies and most of the people attending were there to collect a bag of rice. As KIUC reps even stated they were amazed at how many people attended because usually there's 10-15 people. The question was presented about Section 106 of the Historical Preservation Advisory Consultation and they said "Yes" they were aware of it would be getting involved and it turned out they had no idea what that was. I wanted to ask the question: Will the rates go up when they have to defend themselves against the lawsuits? So anyone heading to the North Shore meeting tomorrow night might want to pin them on their lies and misinformation. I arrived late so this is not a full or adequate summary. Thanks to all the people that have organized against this FERC process with signs, petitions, education, emails, etc.
By Ken Taylor on 21 April 2011 - Wednesday night KIUC/Free Flow Power meeting in Kilauea. Questions I asked tonight. 1) Why not just upgrade the 8 extisting hydo plants? Oh, we plan on looking at that. We sure did not see anything about that in there presentation! 2) Biomass plant, Port Allen: Where will the biomass come from?
We are just starting to look at that, at this time we don't know.
I believe Monday night they said if the County was to come forward with a trash to energy plan, they would entertain it. 3) How do you plan to deal with Section 106 of the Historical Preservation rules and reg.'s?
We plan on following all Fed.,State and County rules and reg.'s. Thats what so good about (FERC).
4) When you have to start defending KIUC against lawsuits, will our rates go up?
No, the good thing about working under (FERC) and we must say, it's such an open process and you get to participate all along the way, so we are protected from law suits under (FERC). You know we would not want to go out and spend, say $ 6m and then have someone bring suit on us.
I think we must STOP the (FERC) process. See also: Ea O Ka Aina: KIUC FFP Monday Waimea Meeting 4/18/11
